Spain has one official national language \u2014 Spanish, more precisely called Castilian (castellano) \u2014 but step outside Madrid and you’ll quickly find yourself in a country that’s officially multilingual. Basque (Euskara), spoken in the Basque Country and Navarre, is a true linguistic mystery: it’s a language isolate, meaning it isn’t related to Spanish, French, or any other known language family \u2014 Indo-European or otherwise.
